Week 1 Finals Review

You could be forgiven in thinking that all of the action for both qualifing finals took place in extras time but in reality it’s far from it.

Sydney United 58 FC advance to the semi finals of the NPL NSW Men’s 1 Finals series as they defeated traditional rivals Marconi Stallions 2-0 at the Sydney United Sports Centre. In ideal conditions on a Saturday afternoon, regular time was unable to split the two sides apart, despite a plethora of chances to both sides.

Finally the deadlock was broken as a double from United striker Patrick Antelmi in the 93rd and 112th minute saw the Edensor Park outfit put the game to bed, ending what has been a great season for the Stallions. Despite being eliminated, Marconi end 2019 with considerable success as they claim the Warratah Cup and a place in the Round of 16 in the FFA Cup against A-League outfit Melbourne City.

In the final’s other match, a penalty shootout was required as APIA Leichhardt Tigers eliminated Blacktown City FC 5-3 on penalties after a deadlocked 1-1 scoreline after 120 minutes. Like the earlier game, the scores during normal time was kept at a knife’s edge with a 0-0 result keeping those braving the cold conditions at Lambert Park at the edge of their seats.

The Tigers struck first with prolific striker Chris Payne netting a goal in the 102nd minute for the homeside. The Tigers must have thought the game was wrapped up but low and behold, City put in the veins of everyone at the ground as Joey Gibbs send the game into a shootout, scoring in the 2nd minute of added time (120+2) which no doubt cast an air of nervousness to everyone watching on. Despite their comeback, it was not meant to be for the visitors as APIA dispatched all their penalties as they sent Blacktown packing with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory.

Wednesday night sees Premiers Wollongong Wolves host APIA Leichhardt Tigers at WIN Stadium in the Major Semi Final (the winner progressing straight to the Final) while Blacktown City will take on Sydney United 58 FC at Lily Homes Stadium in the Minor Semi Final.
