NSL Where Are They Now? – Parramatta Eagles

Parramatta Eagles, better known as Parramatta Melita was established by Maltese migrants in 1956 after the amalgamation of the Malta Eagles and the Melita Soccer Club.

Their first season was played in 1957 where they finished premiers and champions of the 2nd division reserve grade competition, playing out of Arlington Oval. In 1959 they were placed in the third division after the amount of clubs that joined the federation grew, expanding the 2nd division to two groups of 10 teams.

In 1962 they underwent a name change to Melita Eagles-Newtown and played their home games at Fraser Park. By 1967 they had reached the top flight of football in NSW before being relegated again in 1970.

1980 squad

Notably the Eagles competed in the NSL in two stints.

They first competed in the 1984 season after finishing as Premiers in NSW in 1983. The team finished 11th with 24 points and were relegated back to the NSW competition.

They wouldn’t be forced to sit from the grand stage for long though, entering the competition again in 1989 after finishing the NSW competition as Premiers and Champions.

1982-83 Squad

In their 2nd stint the club would win a few pieces of silverware; the NSL cup twice in the 1990/91 season and in the 1993/94 season as well as the NSL Challenge Cup in 1994.

A rough year in the 1994-1995 competition saw the team relegated with Hedelberg United after finishing 12th. The interesting thing about this season, is that all games that were level after 90 minutes would be decided by a penalty shoot out. A win was worth 4 points, a shoot out win was worth 2, a shoot out loss was 1 and no points for a loss in regular time.

The club was relegated at the end of the 2006 season in NSW and evolved into the PCYC Parramatta Eagles, competing in the NSW Winter Super League.

The club would compete in the 2nd division until 2010 when it was sold to the Granville and Districts Soccer Football Association. After claiming the double they were promoted to the Premier League and changed their name to Parramatta FC.

Current Badge

Last year the club was relegated back into the 2nd division, now called NPL 2 and currently faces a tough battle to stay in the 2nd division without slipping back again to division 3.

In all, the club has had various amounts of success over its lifetime, with a number of premierships and championships, as well as thee aforementioned NSL Cup titles.
