Meet the next young Tassie trying to break into the A-League.

The Central Coast Mariners have had a history of outstanding young players coming through their system.

With the likes of Socceroos Tom Rogic, Mat Ryan and Trent Sainsbury just a few examples of their excellent record with young players, 18 year old goalkeeper Reef Murfet is hoping to be the next.

After playing football from juniors right through to NPL level in Tasmania and training from former Sydney FC and Burnley goalkeeper Alex Cisak, Murfet found himself catching the eye of many clubs in the Australian mainland.

“Alex has helped me chase my dreams. (…)

He helped me realise that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible. “

After a trial with NPL side Magpies crusaders and training with A-league club Brisbane Roar during the A-League pre season, it was the Central Coast Mariners who signed the 18 year old to his first professional contract.

Murfet will be featuring for the Mariners under 23 side who compete in the NPL 2 in NSW.

“My goals for the 2021 season with CCM are to play consistently in the U23 squad, as well as training with the A-league squad and the goalkeepers. We have a good squad in the U23’s and I believe we can win the league and gain promotion to NPL 1.”

Reef becomes one of a number of talented players signed from Tasmania to an A-league club, which further amplifies the growing calls for the A-League to expand into Tasmania.

“There is talent in Tasmania, it is just unfortunate that some players don’t get the opportunity to express their footballing ability at a high level. So having an A-league team down there would help give young kids better opportunities to shine and chase their dreams.”
