FFA Cup Round of 32 Matchday 3 Preview

After a night full of action featuring a massive Cup upset, an A-League clash going deep into extra time and a huge 5-0 away win by APIA, we have to prepare ourselves for the 4 games on tonight!

Blacktown City v Central Coast Mariners – 7.30pm – Fox Sports game

Coming to the end of what has been a stellar season by Blacktown in the NPL, they face what could be their toughest opponent in the Mariners. Sitting 1st on the NPL table and looking set to secure the premiership this weekend, many thought we would see another upset in this fixture.

However, Mariners have gone on a huge spending spree in the off season, with some good foreign recruits and will be looking to test them out in their first competitive fixture tonight.

This will be Blacktown’s 4th straight crack at the cup, and many will remember Choi’s wonder goal last year. Their best run coincidentally was last year as well where they reached the quarter finals before being knocked out by finalists Sydney FC 3-0.

The Mariners best run at the cup was back in 2014 where they reached the semi final, losing a nail biting 3-2 to would be champions Adelaide United.

Darwin Rovers v Sydney FC – 7.30pm

If you thought last night’s Peninsula Power v Melbourne City was a David v Goliath battle, what does that make this contest?

Darwin Rovers will be making their 2nd straight appearance in the cup, last year bowing out to Brisbane Strikers in a 6-0 loss in the round of 32. Can they go one better this year?

Standing in their way is the 2016/17 A-League premiers and champions Sydney FC, who lost 2 games all of last season. 1 in the cup final to Melbourne City and once in the season to the Wanderers.

After a long off season and some roster changes, will Sydney FC be able to easily dismiss their Northern Territory opponents? Or will Darwin’s home field advantage and climate play into the home side’s favour?

Gold Coast City FC v Western Knights – 7.30pm

Gold Coast City are currently leading the QLD NPL competition, holding a 3 point lead over A-League hopefuls Brisbane Strikers. Formerly Palm Beach SC, Gold Coast are having their 3rd cup run, missing out last season. In 2014 they reached the quarter finals before losing 5-0 to Central Coast, then in 2015 went out to Western Sydney Wanderers 2-0 after a tough fought match against South Melbourne that ended 8-7 on penalties.

Western Knights currently play in the State league Division 1 in Perth, a division below the NPL where they are currently 1st on the table. They are also the WA State cup winners, defeating Sorrento FC 1-0 earlier this year. They will be hoping to emulate the achievement by Bankstown Berries last week, and defeat a side in the division above to progress through to the round of 16.

Moreton Bay United v Broadmeadow Magic – 7.30pm

This will be Moreton Bay’s first entrance in the cup, which is a great achievement for a club that was established in 2012. They are currently 5th on the table in the Queensland NPL competition, and qualified for the round of 32 by defeating Brisbane Olympic FC in the preliminaries.

Broadmeadow on the other hand will be making their 3rd cup appearance, qualifying in both 2014 and 2015. In 2014 the club from Newcastle lost to Brisbane Strikers 2-1 after extra time and in 2015 they lost to Heidelberg 3-1, both times in the round of 32. They will no doubt fancy their chances and do one better this year. Currently they sit 4th on the NNSW NPL table with 2 games left to play.
