FFA Cup Preview: SU58 v WSW

Tomorrow sees the highly anticipated FFA Cup Round of 16 clash between A-League heavyweights Western Sydney Wanderers as they travel to Campbelltown Stadium to face the “home side” NPL NSW Men’s 1 side Sydney United 58 FC.

Unable to host at their spiritual home of Edensor Park due to various ground “issues” at Sydney United Sports Centre, United will be looking to continue their hot run of form as late, obliterating Blacktown City 7-3 in the Semi Finals and qualifying for the NSW NPL 1 Grand final in stunning fashion with a dramatic 2 – 1 win over Premiers Wollongong Wolves.

All this goes without saying as they have to play 5 games in 14 days, a notion very rare for a semi-professional side. With in form players like Patrick Antelmi upfront, Matt Sim, and Liam Rose in the midfield and stalwart goalkeeper Thomas Manos shoring up the defence behind Adrian Vlastelica and the like, United will be up to the challenge in this Western Sydney Derby.

Calling to arms the Croatian football diaspora around Sydney, Melbourne and the ACT, this will be one game that will go down in history for United.

The Wanderers will be aiming to continue their pre-season on a winning note as Markus Babbel’s side are developing into a well defensive unit, a quality that has been lacking in the past few seasons for the Western Sydney outfit.

An extra time 2 – 1 win against reigning A-League Premiers Perth Glory sealed passage into the Round of 16 and will see to it that an in form Sydney United will not stand in their way to trying to achieve their first lift of the FFA Cup trophy.

Interesting to note that the Edensor Park outfit delivered Western Sydney Wanderers their first ever loss (a 2 – 1 defeat back in August 2012 away to United) so in their second ever meeting, the Wanderers will be looking to get one over their rivals.

In what many will predict to be a close and exciting clash, The Wanderers will be expected to take out the win as perhaps the tired legs and one eye on Saturday’s Grand Final will be a bit too much for the NPL1 side.
