Opinion: Promotion/Relegation Changes

This may be a little controversial, but I think at the end of the day it will be better for the league, by having more teams potentially promoted and relegated each season.

At the moment we have a very basic 1 up, 1 down system between each of the leagues which has been working fine. However in a 14 team league, with 5 making finals, there isn’t much for the bottom few teams to play for apart from escaping that 1 relegation spot.

There are two potential changes that could be made. The first is moving to a 2 up, 2 down system. The second would be to change to a 1.5 up, 1.5 system.

To start with the 1.5 system, the highest and lowest ranked teams gain automatic promotion and relegation, whilst the 2nd and 13th teams have a play off match at the end of the season to determine who is in the higher grade the next season. This is the method used primarily in Germany, but also lots of leagues around the world.

The other option is to have a 2 up, 2 down method. This would make more sense as we have the finals to play as well. This way we would see guaranteed more new teams in each division each year.

It gives the teams that may not finish 1st an incentive to keep trying to push for that 2nd possible promotion spot, whilst at the same time making the teams at the bottom of the table work harder to avoid potential relegation.

What are your thoughts? Should the system stay as it is now with 1 up and 1 down each year? Should we consider changing to one of the systems mentioned above? A play off game would add that final bit of excitement to the season, whilst giving all teams that little extra motivation. Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
