NPL Finals Series

The national finals series lives to see another year, as the 2019 draw was conducted yesterday.

Wollongong Wolves will take on the Capital Football Premiers; either Canberra Olympic or Cooma Tigers, who play tomorrow in the final round. Should Olympic win or draw, they will be premiers. If Cooma get the win away from home, they will instead play in this years finals series. Cooma won the previous fixture 4-1.

The winner of that game will then go on to face the winner of the Victorian and WA sides.

The Victorian representative is likely to be Avondale or Heidelberg and the Perth representative is likely to be Perth SC who currently lead the competition by 9 points with rounds to go, 1 point required to put their premiership beyond doubt.

On the other side of the draw, the Queensland premiers will go toe to toe with Campbelltown City travelling to what is looking to be either Lions or Peninsula Power.

The winner of that tie will play the winner of NNSW and Tasmania. The NNSW representative is very open with 2 rounds remaining, but Maitland currently lead at the top of the table. Olympia FC are leading the way in Tasmania.

The home sides have been determined by the draw with the home sides for the semi finals and grand final to be determined by way of the points system devised for the NPL finals.

This is the system used last season, so it’s not unreasonable to assume it will be the same this time around.

Assuming Wolves win, they would have to win by scoring enough goals and win in normal time to give themselves the best chance possible at having a home game for the semi final and grand final.

Here’s hoping that Wollongong is able to make it through to the grand final and make the round of 32 for next years FFA Cup, giving NSW effectively 6 spots.
