FFA Cup v State Of Origin

It’s happened again.

Round 7 of the FFA Cup is on the same night as the first State of Origin match.

After years of this happening, and years of us complaining about it we receive a reprieve last year as for the first time the two nights didn’t clash. I have fond memories of watching Tarrawanna Blueys v Hakoah at Macedonia Park last year as well as watching the first Origin game in fact.

It begs the question yet again, why are we kicking own goals like this?

Surely, surely the round 7 matches could have been pushed back a week or even played on a Tuesday or Thursday night to avoid the clash?

There will be one game live streamed which is great, with commentary providing live scores around the grounds for the other 4 matches, however we suspect most eyes will be on the NRL’s flagship series.

It is absolutely criminal that what is effectively a round of 64 match, the qualifying match for the round of 32 where our sides will have the chance to test themselves against interstate opposition or even an A-League club, that we will be bleeding people to Origin.

We know there are a lot of people that may have gone to a match to support their team if not for Origin being on the same night. There are thousands that watch rugby league at no other point during the season but will watch Origin, because that’s just what people do in NSW.

It’s frustrating to no end and we really hope that FNSW address it going forward and do their best to ensure that the two nights don’t clash again.

After all, it’s not like we can tell the other mob to move their games.
