FFA Cup Round 7 Preview

FNSW

It’s been quite a while since we’ve done a preview of cup games, and now that there is 1 round left in NSW with only 5 games, it’s the perfect time to start!

Sydney Olympic v APIA Leichhardt Tigers

So not only will these two teams be facing off next weekend, they will also be meeting in a mid week cup tie.

Olympic is sitting 1st on the table, 1 win above the Tigers and with just under half the season left it will be interesting to see how these two teams will treat their two matches in 4 days?

Do they place more value on the cup or the league? Most, if not everyone I think would agree that reaching the Round of 32 of the Cup has higher value.

Olympics road to the cup: 7-0 Emu Plains, 2-0 Terrigal United, 3-0 Hawkesbury City

APIAs road to the cup: 9-1 Fraser Park, 4-0 Wollongong Olympic, 3-2 St George FC

Tarrawanna Blueys v Hakoah Sydney City East FC

Ah the Blueys, this years NSW Cinderella Story. Last year their IPL foes Bulli FC and Kemblawarra Fury both made the final NSW round, and both fell short by 3 goals.

Can the team from Tarrawanna become the first IPL team and the lowest ranked side to make the national tournament?

They currently sit 5th on the IPL table with 5 wins, a draw and 3 losses, just 2 wins away from 1st placed Bulli.

Hakoah Sydney on the other hand reached the round of 32 in the 2014 edition of the cup, and set the record for the lowest placed side to achieve that feat, as at that time they were in NPL 3 (State League 1).

They had qualified a 2nd time last season, bowing out 3-2 to Melbourne City in the Round of 16.

Blueys road to the cup: 5-1 Sydney North West SC, 2-0 Macarthur Rams, 1-1 (Pens) UNSW, 2-1 Kirrawee Kangaroos

Hakoahs road to the cup: 3-1 Canterbury Bankstown, 2-0 Sutherland Sharks, 2-0 Mounties Wanderers

Hills United FC v Bonnrigg White Eagles FC

This will be Hills 2nd round of 32 appearance should they upset the White Eagles, after qualifying last year.

A lot of people may remember Hills had the chance to beat Hakoah last year, almost scoring on the break, however they went on to lose 6-3 after extra time.

Hills are currently sitting in 4th place in NPL 2 with 6 wins and 4 draws.

This would be Bonnyriggs 2nd cup appearance should they beat Hills, last qualifying in 2016 where they defeated Manly United 3-0 before losing 3-0 to Blacktown City in the Round of 16.

2016 was also the year conspiracy theorists were out, as there were 5 all NSW ties across the final rounds.

Hills road to the cup: 2-1 Blacktown Spartans, 3-1 BTH Raiders, 3-1 Central Coast United

Bonnyriggs road to the cup: 6-1 Woongarrah Wildcats, 3-1 Northern Tigers, 1-0 AET St George GA

Rockdale City Suns FC v Blacktown City FC

Rockdale currently sits 10th on the NPL table, having one of their worse seasons in recent memory.

Rockdale are attempting to qualify for the 2nd time, their 1st time being in 2015. They defeted Perth SC 1-0 before losing to Melbourne Victory 3-2 at home.

Blacktown City are looking to continue their tag as cup specialists, by qualifying for their 5th straight round of 32. Last year was their best run, defeating Central Coast Mariners 3-2, then APIA 3-1 before taking Western Sydney Wanderers all the way to penalties for a spot in the semi final.

Rockdales road to the cup: 12-0 Gelebe Wanderers, 3-0 Bankstown Unitted, 2-1 Sydney United 58

Blacktowns road to the cup:  9-1 Blue Mountains, 2-1 Manly United, Forfeit by Gladesvulle Ryde Magic

Marconi Stallions FC v Spirit FC

Marconi are attempting to qualify for the round of 32 for the 2nd time, their first time being in 2016.

They unfortunately lost out to Hume City 4-2 on penalties after finishing 1-1.

Marconi are currently sitting 8th on the NSW NPL table after being promoted last season.

Spirit FC are attempting to qualify for their 1st round of 32 of the FFA Cup.

Spirit is currently sitting 9th on the NSW NPL 2 table, and a round of 32 appearance would do absolute wonders for the club.

Marconi’s road to the cup: 2-1 Parramatta FC, 4-2 Gladesville Ravens, 4-1 SD Raiders

Spirits road to the cup: 3-3 Hurstville ZFC, 2-1 Wollongong Wolves, 4-0 Bomaderry SC
