FFA Cup Match Day 2

It’s full time in Game Day #2 of the FFA Cup Round of 32 as Marconi Stallions FC have created their own piece of club history as a 3-0 win over South Hobart FC sees them progress into the Round of 16 for the first time in three attempts in the national competition.

A first half double from Marko Jesic and a late 89th minute header from Damien Tsekenis from a corner seals the Stallions’ progression into the next round over their Tasmanian opponents.

In the all NPL New South Wales tie, it took extra time to decide a winner as Sydney United 58 FC defeated St George Saints FC 5-3 to advance to the Round of 16. After trailing 1-0 at the half thanks to a Patrick Antelmi goal, the Saints clawed back to make the score 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes.

Josh McDonald scored the game’s second and the Cups 550th goal (fun fact) to make it 2-0. To their credit, St George fought hard and goals from Musashi Kokobu and Marcus Beattie in the 63rd and 78th minute respectively put the game on a knife edge. A goal in added time from United’s Yanni Perkatis would have sealed the game for the visitors if it weren’t for another Kokobu goal deep deep into added time, levelling the score to make it 3-3 at the end of regular time.

United’s Tariq Maia thumping shot in the 108th minute put his side in the lead and a fantastic finish by Michael Rugs sends the visitors back to Edensor Park with a 5-3 win and the will to fight another day in the Round of 16.
