2017 Waratah Cup Preview

This Waratah cup final is a true David and Goliath battle.

APIA Leichhardt last won the Waratah Cup in 2013. In that same year, Hakoah were crowned champions in the NSW State League One.

APIA currently sit 2nd on the table, whilst Hakoah are in 8th place. APIA has done the double over Hakoah this year winning 2-0 and 4-1.

Every stat that you can find will suggest that APIA will win the final with ease. However, as everyone knows in a cup final, all form goes out the window.

Road to the final:

APIA Leichhardt: 3-0 Leichhardt Saints. 4-0 Killarney Districts. 2-0 Bonnyrigg White Eagles. 2-1 SD Raiders. 3-0 Blacktown City.

14 Goals scored and only 1 goal conceded. However many will remember that it was that 1 goal against SD Raiders that almost cost them entry to the FFA Cup round of 32, if it were not for a last minute equaliser before a last kick of extra time goal. Otherwise the Tigers have had a fairly easy run into the cup final.

Hakoah Sydney City East: 6-1 Inter Lions. 1-1 Manly (4-2 pens). 3-3 Albion Park White eagles (4-2 Pens). 3-1 Rockdale City Suns. 3-2 Sydney United 58.

Hakoah obviously have had a slightly different run into the final, one that many might call a fairy tale run. Their games against Manly United and Albion park were two of the hardest that they had to play, both ending in draws after the 120 minutes followed by a nervous penalty shoot out.

Their win against Rockdale to put them into the FFA Cup round of 32 certainly shocked most people if not everyone. If that win didn’t prove them to be a genuine contender for the cup then their win against Sydney United certainly showed it.

Again, this is a game that Hakoah seemingly have no right to win. However you simply cannot write the team off, especially after their efforts against Rockdale and Sydney United.

APIA on the other hand will be going into this game full of confidence, knowing that they are the heavy favourites. It is that confidence though that may cause them to underestimate their opponents somewhat.

We’re in for a treat of a game, one that should have plenty of opportunities, spectacular saves and some heroic efforts.

However, my prediction is a 3-1 win to APIA Leichhardt to lift the trophy.
